Tudor
"For some years now I have been considering the idea of making a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standards of dependability for which Rolex is famous. I decided to form a separate company, with the object of making and marketing this new watch. It is called the Tudor Watch Company."
In 1905 Hans Wilsdorf launched his own watch business which, in 1915 became the Rolex watch company. It was not until 1946 that the Tudor name was added to the company portfolio.
From the beginning, Tudor was seen as a lower priced line. When the first Rolex Tudor Oyster was launched the movement was supplied by Ebauches SA.
In 1952 The Royal Navy mounted a scientific expedition to Greenland. 30 Tudor Oyster Price watches were included on this mission. Later in the 1960s and 70s Tudor Prince Submariners were used by the US and French Navies.
